A tram derailed in Milan, leaving one person dead and dozens injured, and the incident has sparked a flood of questions about what happened and why.
“I thought it was an earthquake. I was sitting down and I fell to the floor, along with the other passengers,” a man told Ansa news agency. “It was terrible.”
As the tram left the track, it apparently struck a traffic light first before smashing the window of a nearby restaurant. A delivery rider waiting at the light and a young man on the sidewalk narrowly escaped harm, according to La Repubblica’s reporting.
“I got on at the first stop, [Piazza della] Repubblica,” a female passenger told Corriere della Sera. “I was standing beside the driver, and we all crashed into each other.”
“I just heard an enormous bang,” said 27-year-old Anna, who was nearby in an office, as quoted by AFP. “I saw part of the tram push into a shop.”
Civil protection teams have set up a tent at the site to assist the injured.
The exact cause of the derailment remains unclear. Media reports have suggested the tram may have taken a sharp corner too quickly as it exited Viale Vittorio Veneto.
