Get ready for some major changes at a crucial junction in Middlesbrough! A significant upgrade is coming, and it's going to cause quite a stir.
The A172 Marton Road/A174 Interchange is about to undergo an extensive repair and improvement project, starting next month. This project aims to enhance the bridge's safety and functionality, but it's not going to be an easy ride for commuters.
Here's where it gets controversial: The works, which include concrete repairs, waterproofing replacements, new kerbs, resurfacing, and safety barrier installations, will require a temporary contraflow system on the A172. This means reduced traffic capacity over the bridge, with single lanes in each direction. It's a necessary step to ensure the work can be carried out safely, but it's bound to cause some frustration for drivers.
The project is expected to last from March until autumn 2026, with temporary traffic lights and occasional overnight closures. Motorists will also face restrictions when accessing Marton Road from the A174, with left turns only onto Stokesley Road, and no right turns permitted. Additionally, right turns onto the A174 from the bridge will be prohibited.
And this is the part most people miss: Middlesbrough Council has worked hard to minimize disruption by allowing traffic to continue using the bridge during the works. They've collaborated closely with Esh Construction to implement this strategy, and advanced warning signs will be placed on affected roads to keep everyone informed.
A spokesperson for Middlesbrough Council said, "These repairs are essential, and we understand the inconvenience they may cause. We aim to keep delays to a minimum, and we appreciate the public's patience and understanding during this time."
