India's AI Summit: A Disappointing Start?
The future of AI and its potential impact on society are on full display at India's AI Summit, but the opening day was marred by chaos and confusion.
With over 100 countries participating and tech giants like Sam Altman and Sundar Pichai in attendance, the summit aims to showcase India's talent and innovation in AI. Prime Minister Modi emphasized India's ambition to create solutions not just for its own country but for the entire world.
However, the event's inaugural day was overshadowed by complaints of poor organization and crowd control. Social media platforms were flooded with grievances from attendees, including founders and exhibitors, who were left stranded outside exhibition halls due to security sweeps and last-minute closures.
Maitreya Wagh, co-founder of Bolna, a voice AI startup, expressed his frustration on X, stating that he couldn't access his company's booth after the gates were shut. Punit Jain, founder of Reskill, described the situation as a logistical nightmare, with early morning queues and hours of waiting, followed by a full evacuation before the prime minister's arrival.
But here's where it gets controversial... Some attendees even reported theft of products from exhibition stalls, with Dhananjay Yadav, founder of NeoSapiens, alleging that his company's wearables were stolen. He highlighted the significant investment his company made in travel, accommodation, and exhibition space, only to have their products disappear within a high-security zone.
Additionally, several attendees complained about the payment methods at food stalls, with only cash accepted, causing inconvenience, especially for international visitors. Soumya Sharma, founder of Livo AI, a healthcare-focused startup, revealed that many discussions were held behind closed doors, and security shut down sessions due to overcrowding, preventing delegates from participating.
And this is the part most people miss... The closures and operational lapses not only undermined the summit's goal of showcasing India's AI ecosystem but also raised concerns about the country's ability to utilize AI effectively. Sharma emphasized the need to solve basic on-ground issues first, stating, "AI is only part of the system. Unless we get the fundamentals right, we cannot claim to be harnessing AI's full potential."
