Audi RS5: Unveiling the 630bhp Plug-in Hybrid with a Twist! (2026)

Get ready for a thrilling ride as we unveil the new Audi RS5, a 630bhp powerhouse that's set to give the BMW M3 a run for its money! But here's the twist: it retains its iconic V6 engine, a bold move that's sure to spark some heated debates among car enthusiasts.

This plug-in hybrid beast offers an impressive 50 miles of electric-only range, making it an unconventional yet enticing choice for those seeking a company car. With its powerful 420mm steel front discs and 400mm rear brakes, the RS5 ensures you can stop as swiftly as you accelerate. And for those who want the ultimate in braking performance, Audi's carbon-ceramic brakes offer a 30kg weight reduction, a small price to pay for such an upgrade.

But the real game-changer is the new plug-in hybrid drivetrain. Audi claims it's addressed the long-standing understeer issue of the RS4, and the numbers back it up. A dynamic torque control system with an electromechanical rear differential can shift an astonishing 1475lb ft of torque between the wheels in an instant, effectively eliminating understeer. This, combined with a locking center differential capable of sending 100% of power to the rear wheels, gives the RS5 a drift mode that's sure to put a smile on any driver's face.

"Basically, there is no understeer," says Audi's Michl. "Even the latest RS4 has improved, but this is a whole new level. It's my favorite development because you can experience it every day."

While we await Autocar's road test verdict, one thing's for sure: the RS5 is now firmly in the conversation with its key rivals, the BMW M3 and Mercedes-AMG C63, both of which offer similar rear-biased four-wheel-drive systems.

The RS5's design is just as aggressive as its performance. It sits lower and wider than the standard A5, with a choice of 20- or 21-inch alloy wheels that give it an imposing stance. "We had to go all out to truly differentiate it from the base model," says designer Wolf Seebers. "Some of our proposals went even further into motorsport territory, but we wanted to tone it down a bit. In my opinion, this is already quite restrained."

So, what do you think? Is the new Audi RS5 a game-changer, or is it just another flashy sports car? Join the discussion in the comments and let us know your thoughts!
